Methanol Poisoning e-Learning Course

Introducing

As part of the drive to enhance awareness on methanol poisoning, its diagnosis and treatment, MSF Hong Kong and Oslo University hospital jointly developed this online course to provide medical personnel with comprehensive knowledge, skills, and resources to understand the mechanisms of toxicity, diagnose and treat methanol poisoning, evaluate prognostic aspects, and enhance emergency preparedness for effective response to outbreaks.

Anyone is welcomed to complete the course, however we strongly encourage medical, paramedical, and other healthcare professionals to complete the course to supplement your current knowledge.

Course information

Module 1: Introduction

In this module, you will learn why and how methanol poisoning becomes a problem.

Module 2: Mechanisms of Toxicity

In this module, you will learn to identify how methanol becomes toxic to the body.

Module 3: Diagnosis

In this module, you will learn how to diagnose methanol poisoning based on what is available as equipment. You will learn about what is important for examining a patient’s history and identify the main clinical features for methanol poisoning, as well as how to interpret various analytical options and distinguish methanol poisoning from other diagnoses. Throughout the module, you will be presented with different patients who arrive at your hospital with different symptoms and you will be tasked with making decisions on the diagnosis of each patient along the way.

Module 4: Treatment

In this module, you will learn how to treat methanol poisoning based on currently available treatment options and the rationale behind the use of these options. Throughout the module, you will follow the patients presented in the previous module and will have to make decisions on their treatment along the way.

Module 5: Prognosis and Emergency Preparedness

In this module, you will learn to rate the different prognostic markers of methanol poisoning for more informed decision making in managing patients. You will also be presented with a scenario where you have to plan and make decisions for emergency preparedness and response.

Module 6: Interpreting Blood Gas

This is an optional module for doctors and medical personnel who wish to learn how to interpret blood gas for the diagnosis of methanol poisoning. At the end of each section in this module, you will be presented with quiz questions to help you reflect on what you have learnt. It is recommended that you complete Modules 1 to 5 as part of the basic training on methanol poisoning before completing this module.

Format:

Self-paced e-learning. Desktop and mobile friendly.

Evaluation:

To pass this course, you have to complete modules 1 to 5. You will be presented with case studies featuring different patients and scenarios. In these scenarios, you will be required to make decisions regarding their diagnosis, treatment, and overall management. At the end of each module, you will be required to compete a short quiz to test your knowledge.

Certification:

Upon completion of the course (all mandatory modules) you will be awarded a badge and a certificate.

Medical, paramedical, and other healthcare professionals who may be involved in identifying, diagnosing, treating, and/or managing patients of methanol poisoning. For example, personnel from:
- MoH, poison control centres, medical associations, toxicology societies, medical NGOs, medical universities, medical students
